Retiring GOP Senator Rob Portman will be leaving office in 2022, leaving the door open for what is sure to be a crowded primary as Republicans try to replace him. Donald Trump carried Ohio in 2020 by a wide margin, eight percentage points, making the state a conservative bastion.

Former Ohio treasurer Josh Mandel is the first Republican to throw his hat in the race to replace Portman. Mandel was run twice for Senate, unsuccessfully, but this time plans to run on a much more aggressively pro-Trump platform. Mandel claims he was encouraged to run for office after seeing the second impeachment of Donald Trump playing out.

“Watching this sham and unconstitutional impeachment has made my blood boil and motivated me to run for U.S. Senate,” Mandel told reporters in a prepared statement. “It’s sickening to see radical liberals and fake Republicans in Washington engage in this second assault on President Donald Trump and the millions of us who supported him.”
