Sparking further controversy around the 2020 presidential race, the Democratic Party of New York has canceled their primary. This is the first time in history a presidential primary has been cancelled. The Democratic Party gave the official reason for the cancellation as concern over the novel coronavirus.

While some pundits lauded the move as important for public health, others lambasted the DNC for their decision. Many noted that mail-in voting would have been a fine replacement for in-person ballots. Supporters of Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, in particular, have been incensed by the move. The Sanders campaign recently asked to remain on the ballot in New York, shortly before the cancellation was official.

Sanders Supporters Suspicious

Supporters of progressive candidate Sanders find the DNC’s moves in New York highly suspicious. Presumptive nominee Joe Biden is currently facing very credible rape allegations from Tara Reade. This has caused many of Sanders’ supporters to call for Biden to drop out of the race.

Several have noted that CNN seems to be covering up the truth for Biden. The network recently removed an episode of “Larry King Live” from their website. In the episode, Reade’s mother calls in and asks for advice about the incident. Not long after the removal of the episode, the DNC moved to cancel the biggest primary that has yet to be counted.

Cancellation Draws Criticism

It’s not hard to see what Sanders’ supporters are driving at. A divisive, centrist candidate is under credible accusations of rape. Sanders, who enjoys massive popularity with younger voters, has been drawing considerable votes even after officially suspending his campaign.

It isn’t hard to imagine that the DNC might be cancelling the NY primary in order to head off an embarrassing upset.

“Today’s decision by the State of New York Board of Elections is an outrage, a blow to American democracy, and must be overturned by the DNC,” stated Sanders’ campaign advisor, Jeff Weaver.

Does DNC Have Genuine Concern for Voters’ Wellbeing?

Sanders has argued in the past that the DNC doesn’t seem concerned with the well-being of the people. While many Americans are concerned over their Humira medicare cost or are scrambling to make ends meet, Nancy Pelosi is showing off her two expensive fridges on late night talk shows.

Many pundits noted that if the Democratic Party was concerned for health, they could have simply turned the June primary in New York into a mail-in only contest. The move to cancel it outright only hands Trump ammunition, they argue.

“Just last week Vice President Biden warned the American people that President Trump could use the current crisis as an excuse to postpone the November election,” Weaver continued. “Well, he now has a precedent thanks to New York state.”
