The President has issued a memorandum ordering all US intelligence agencies to assist Attorney General William Barr in his investigation of surveillance on Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign.
Trump has long held that his campaign was spied on, but the FBI and other intelligence agencies insist they were investigating leads in accordance with the law. Now, AG Barr can declassify materials related to that investigation at will.
“Today’s action will help ensure that all Americans learn the truth about the events that occurred, and the actions that were taken, during the last Presidential election and will restore confidence in our public institutions,” said White House press secretary Sarah Sanders.
U.S. Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif. felt different about the move, calling the memorandum an effort to “weaponize law enforcement and classified information.”
Barr himself insists that the investigation into the Mueller investigation is simply to ensure that intelligence agencies weren’t abusing their power.
“I’m not saying that happened, but I’m saying that we have to look at that,” said Barr.
