Texas Mayor Tim Boyd Resigns After Social Media Disaster

Tim Boyd, the mayor of Colorado City in West Texas, has stepped down following a frustrated Facebook post in which he told freezing residents to stop complaining. “No one owes you or your family anything; nor is it the local government’s responsibility to support you during trying times like this! Sink or swim, it’s your choice!” wrote the mayor in the widely-shared post.

Boyd’s outburst, in which he suggested people “complaining” about the sub-freezing temperatures were the product of bad parenting and lazy, was emblematic for many left-leaning pundits of the entire worldview of conservative leadership. Online commentators swiftly called for Boyd’s resignation, excoriating him for his lack of empathy for his own citizens.

Boyd seems to have deleted his Facebook page after the post went viral and resulted in a wave of bad press for his office. He has not publicly commented on the fallout of the post yet. At the time of this writing, millions of people in Texas are still without power.
