Pregnant Women Are Being Asked to Stay Indoors for Three Months

Officials are asking pregnant women in the United Kingdom to stay home for three months. This might be a good idea for those in the United States as well. And why? Because the U.K. government considers pregnant women to be most at-risk for the coronavirus. They, along with the elderly and those with health conditions, need to stay safe during the coronavirus scare.

The good news is that officials don’t believe the women might pass something along to their babies. But they acknowledge that it’s easier for pregnant women to catch an infection than women who are not pregnant.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson unveiled the new coronavirus advice during a televised afternoon briefing, saying:

“This advice about avoiding all social contact is particularly important for people over 70, for pregnant women and for those with some health conditions.”

This advice was also passed along by England’s chief medical doctor Professor Chris Whitty, who explained:

“The group of people who we would want to take this advice particularly seriously are older people above 70, people who in adult life would normally be advised to have the flu vaccination, so these are people with chronic diseases such as chronic heart disease or chronic kidney disease,” he said.

“And also, as a precautionary measure, because we are early in our understanding and we want to be sure – women who are pregnant,” he continued. “Those are the groups we want to take particular care to minimize their social contact which of course will have very significant risks for them.”

San Francisco Is Shutting Down for Three Weeks, Starting Tonight

Just like Italy, San Francisco is taking measures to combat the coronavirus spread by banning almost everyone from leaving their homes. This move was announced by Mayor London Breed in what she called a “defining moment” in the U.S. response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Starting at 12 AM, all San Francisco residents can only leave their homes to go to the grocery store or to a doctor’s appointment. It matches the rules currently in place in Italy. It is the strictest policy enacted in the United States as of the time of writing.

The new policy will remain in effect for at least three weeks. Residents are expected to shelter in place unless their employer falls under a list of “essential businesses.” Some of these include gas stations, shelters, grocery stores, health care operations, banks and media outlets.

Restaurants are also allowed to remain open, but only for delivery and takeout.

Professor Anshul Sama, a sleep disorder expert, has got you covered with his new invention. It’s a device that will send a small electrical current to a person’s tongue when they snore.
