Putting Christmas decorations up early might be fun for some in the Christmas spirit, but this family had their HOA tell them to take their decorations down. The family, in San Antonio, Texas, put up their Christmas decoration on November 1.
Then, their neighborhood homeowners association told them they needed to hold off on that.
Claudia and Nick Simonis received a letter from Diamond Association Management & Consulting, their HOA, on November 4. The letter read that it was too early for Christmas decorations and that they would need to come down until closer to the holidays.
Claudia, speaking to a local news station, said that she felt it was unreasonable to ask them to take down their Christmas decorations but not give them a time frame in which they should put them back up. The letter only stated that they should wait until “closer to the holiday season.”
Claudia pointed out that she is eight months pregnant, and will thus likely be unable to put the display up by the time December starts.
Claudia and Nick have a lot of support from the neighborhood. According to Nick, their neighbors are standing with them in solidarity in the face of their HOA. Several people in the neighborhood are now putting their Christmas decorations up early in defiance of the silly mandate.
In an interview, Nick stated that their decorations aren’t going anywhere. “It’s the Christmas spirit. We’re not going to be forced by the HOA to take it down.” As of yet, there has been no statement from the HOA about the issue aside from the initial letter. The Simonis family and their neighbors found the HOA’s demands a bit ridiculous.
Neighbor Charles Minton also spoke to local news, stating, “These are the holidays. This is what we do. We take care of our neighbors. That’s what a neighborhood is about.” Minton himself has a “Merry Christmas” sign and a group of penguins among his decorations. It seems, in this case, the HOA might be a bit out of its depth!
