Can You Match Freddie Mercury’s Voice? Try Out Google’s Freddiemeter

Google’s Freddiemeter was created as a collaboration between the band itself, Google’s Creative Lab, and the record labels that hold the rights to some of the greatest Queen songs ever recorded to bring you a unique experience – with just a microphone (or your phone), you can find out how similar your voice is to Freddie Mercury’s iconic pipes.

Don’t get too upset if you don’t get a perfect score. Mercury wasn’t just known for his flamboyant style or unique persona, but also for his amazing four-octave vocal range that let him hit all sorts of notes.

Why Has Google Created the Freddiemeter?

The Freddiemeter was created to celebrate the very first gig Queen ever played, which was in November of 1975. That’s right – 44 years ago this month, the world got their first taste of Queen.

The Freddiemeter is also helping to bring awareness to the Mercury Phoenix Trust, which is the charity that was founded by Queen’s surviving members after Mercury’s passing in 1991, 28 years ago this month.

The Mercury Phoenix Trust works worldwide to help raise awareness and fight HIV/AIDS. While you don’t have to donate to enjoy the Freddiemeter, it is mentioned.

How Does the Freddiemeter Work?

You’re going to need a microphone, but as the program runs on Andriod and iOS, in addition to your PC, you don’t have to be trapped at your computer desk to properly sing like Freddie. Anywhere can be your new concert venue.

You can choose between four iconic Queen songs, Bohemian Rhapsody, Don’t Stop Me Now, We Are The Champions, and Somebody to Love. Once chosen, it’s like fancy karaoke. You simply sing into your mic, and the program tracks your vocals and scores you.

You can get anywhere from a 0, meaning you don’t sound ANYTHING like Freddie, to 100%, which is pretty darn impressive. A few of us at the office tried it, but the highest we got was 53%.

The program uses “on-device machine learning models” to make the comparisons, but Google says that no data will be uploaded to their servers. This is purely for fun, not another face aging scam.

You can check out the program here, and try it for yourself. Are you a singing guru like Freddie, or have you fallen flat?
