This image of Streep wearing Trump makeup is making rounds across the internet, and for good reason. This selfie taken by Meryl Streep, 70, shows the attention to detail this Academy Award-winning actress took when crafting the look.
From the white around the eyes to the hair flip that mocks his questionable hairstyle (how has no one told him that doesn’t look good?!), Streep went all-in on this costume, shown below.
While these photos aren’t recent, with Halloween approaching, and Streep’s orange-and-white face paint trending again, we wanted to bring to light just how great her performance really was.
Streep took to the stage at New York’s Shakespeare in the Park in 2016, before Trump was even elected, to mock the then-presidential-hopeful candidate.
She donned orange makeup, carefully avoiding the eyes, slicked the sides of her hair back and pinned it so it flopped over her head (some say she wore a wig, but it’s clear this is her real hair!), and put on a fat suit for what might be her favorite role yet.
Trump appeared on stage with Christine Baranski, who Streep worked with on “Mamma Mia!” and “Into the Woods”, to sing “Brush Up Your Shakespeare”, a famous duet normally sung by two men from Kiss Me Kate.
The song is all about womanizing, impressing the ladies, and making an impact. All of which Trump hopes to do.
The audience loved Streep’s performance, who has been called the greatest actress of her generation in the past.
Streep took some liberties with some of the lyrics, which really sold the role – including sneaking in the line, “You’ll let me know why all the women say no.”
Baranski replied to Streep, “Just declaim a few lines from Othello, and they’ll think you’re a hell of a fellow.”
These two have never gotten along, and Streep’s performance really nailed home that fact for Trump in 2016, while he was still just running for President.
In 2017, Streep used her time accepting an award at the Golden Globes to attack Trump, though never using his name specifically. She spoke out against violence, disrespect, and called for the protection of journalists working with the White House.
She did mention the specific incident in which Trump mocked a reporter with a disability – “it was that moment when the person asking to sit in the most respected seat in our country imitated a disabled reporter, someone he outranked in privilege, power and the capacity to fight back.”
She never had to use Trump’s name – by the next morning, everyone knew who she was talking about.
Trump fired back on Twitter, calling Streep the most over-rated actress in Hollywood, and says he never mocked a reported but instead ‘showed him “groveling” when he totally changed a 16-year-old story that he had written’ in order to make Trump “look bad”.
