Larry Nassar’s Abuse Victims Offered $215 Million Settlement

Larry Nassar’s abuse victims have been offered a $215 million dollar settlement by USA Gymnastics as part of their plan to settle their bankruptcy.

The plan that was filed in the US Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Indiana offers two options for the survivors of the abuse. They can continue with their current lawsuits, or they can vote together to accept the $215 million settlement that has been offered.

Nassar Abuse Survivors to Decide As a Group Whether to Accept the Settlement

Li Li Leung, USAG’s president, and CEO said in a news release, “While we do not yet have an agreement with the Committee representing the survivors, we still hope to reach an agreement.”

“USA Gymnastics filed its proposed plan to communicate to the survivor class the two options that are currently available based on the amount of money USA Gymnastics’ insurers are willing to pay into a settlement fund,” she continued.

However, Rachael Denhollander, who first brought light to Nassar’s abuse in 2016, said she was “beyond disappointed” by what USAG offered.

On Twitter, she wrote, “Noticeably absent from this plan is any of the specific reforms we’ve publicly asked for, for years. How much is a little girl worth? Apparently far less than the damage she’s incurred.

The accuser’s attorney, John C. Manly, also criticized the offer by USAG on Thursday, telling the New York Times that he found it “unconscionable.”

“I’m not in a position to reject it,” he said, “but in speaking to my clients and other lawyers, there’s a better chance of Donald Trump endorsing Bernie Sanders than the victims accepting this offer.”

USAG Offers an Additional Incentive if the Survivors Accept their Offer

In a news release, USAG also offered an additional incentive if the survivors are willing to accept their offer, saying that they’d provide an additional 2.1 million for the settlement via the insurance company for Twistars, a Michigan gymnastics club where some of the abuse occurred.

“In addition, the plan includes benchmarks that obligate USA Gymnastics to continue to enhance athlete safety and provides for payments to other creditors of USA Gymnastics,” said the organization.
