Sophie Grégoire Trudeau Tests Positive for Coronavirus, Justin Trudeau in Lockdown

Justin Trudeau and his wife are now in isolation after she tested positive for the virus after reporting flu-like symptoms, including mild fever, on Wednesday.

“She is feeling well, is taking all the recommended precautions and her symptoms remain mild,” said a statement by the Prime Minister’s Office.

Grégoire, 44, and Trudeau, 48 are “in good health,” and Trudeau himself has no symptoms and will remain in quarantine for 14 days. This makes him the first world leader to go into isolation.

Because Justin Trudeau has no symptoms, officials will not test him for the time being. He also plans to address Canadians on Friday. He was scheduled to hold meetings over the next two days, but they’ve now been postponed, says the BBC.

When Trudeau’s wife first started to show symptoms, the Prime Minister sent out a tweet on Thursday morning that read:

“I have some personal news to share today. Sophie recently returned from a speaking event in the UK, and last night she was experiencing mild flu-like symptoms. She’s feeling better, but following the advice of our doctor she is self-isolating as we wait on COVID-19 results.”

He later tweeted an update, presumably from a cellular phone, confirming that Sophie did indeed test positive for coronavirus.

Personal Message From Sophie Grégoire Trudeau

Sophie Trudeau also released a statement on Thursday saying that she’s doing okay despite having “uncomfortable symptoms.” Her statement reads:

“Personal Message from Sophie:

To all my friends, family, beloved Canadians, and allies everywhere,

First, I’d like to say a big thank you to all of you who have reached out to me asking how I’m doing. Although I’m experiencing uncomfortable symptoms of the virus, I will be back on my feet soon. Being in quarantine at home is nothing compared to other Canadian families who might be going through this and for those facing more serious health concerns.

We will get through this situation together. Please share the facts and take your health seriously. I send you all my courage and warm thoughts (but only “get better” hugs from afar!)

Sincerely, Sophie”
