Gov. Kristi Noem signed a bill that forces South Dakota public schools to display the words in a prominent location for all students to see. The bill requires that the display be at least 12 inches, although it can be on anything the principal feels is appropriate, from a plaque, to a mural, to student artwork.

Lawmakers Hearing Concerns Over Freedom of Religion

There are already concerns that displaying “In God We Trust” will alienate some students who are of non-Christian backgrounds.

A group of students has already spoken to their school board to express their concerns over the new bill. The students said that it is important to make all feel welcome in this country because it is “a cultural melting pot.” They also cited the First Amendment and freedom of religion.

While the school board heard their concerns, they have not taken any action.
