About 100 people in Colorado just learned that technology isn’t always as reliable as we’d like it to be.
If you’ve ever been stuck in a huge traffic jam due to something like a wreck, you probably know that apps like Google Maps will sometimes offer a detour that will reroute you around the traffic.
However, some drivers in Colorado might think twice before they follow those detours next time!
On Sunday, a crash on Peña Boulevard, which leads to Denver International Airport, prompted Google Maps to divert drivers down a different route to avoid the traffic jam. According to one driver, the detour supposedly cut her driving time in half, so she followed it.
The detour took drivers down a dirt road. And while it seemed odd, one driver said that after seeing plenty of cars taking the same detour, she assumed it would be okay.
Unfortunately, recent rain had turned it into a muddy mess that most cars couldn’t make it through. As vehicles got stuck, about 100 others got trapped behind them, too.
In a statement, Google said that they encourage drivers to “use their best judgment while driving” and that they should be aware that unforeseen circumstances like weather can cause problems.
Google also said that the road was not marked as private.
