If you’ve been having money troubles, worry not – NASA has a plan to land a probe on an asteroid made almost entirely of gold, which has enough inside of it to make everyone on Earth a billionaire!
NASA has plans to launch a probe in 2022 to the asteroid, which is located between Mars and Jupiter’s orbit. The probe won’t reach Psyche 16 until 2026, and scientists are hoping to discover more about how the core of Earth and other planets like it are formed.
The asteroid is almost 100% metal and made up mostly of gold, with some platinum, iron, and nickel for good measure. It’s believed to have been formed after two planets struck each other during the beginning of our solar system.
While NASA has no plans to mine Psyche 16 or bring space-gold into the market, other private space companies have their eyes on the asteroid and others like it.
Experts in the field say that the amount of gold and precious metal in the Earth is nothing compared to what is out on space, and asteroid ownership has been a legal thing since 2015. There is no question that it is not a matter of if, but when, we will see space metals become popular.
