Bill Cosby has been hit with a major legal bill this week, which marks the end of his first year into his sentence. Cosby is serving 3-10 years in prison for an assault in 2004 that happened at his estate, but over 60 women have come forward against him since that time.
The legal bill Cosby is looking at? A staggering $2.75 million, all going to Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan of Los Angeles. Defense isn’t cheap!
Cosby tried to challenge the California arbitration award that upheld a $7 million legal bill from just the one LA firm defending him, saying that the price tag was “egregious” and he shouldn’t have to pay it.
Last week, however, a judge sided with the firm, upholding the remaining $2.75 million that the Cosby estate will have to pay.
If you’re interested in the math breakdown, this means that Cosby was paying approximately $1 million a month in legal fees leading up to the court case, where he was ultimately found guilty anyway.
Lawyers for the firm make anywhere between $500 to $1,075 an hour.
The full legal bill was split between Cosby himself and American International Group Inc, Cosby’s insurance provider who was ultimately financially responsible for helping defend him in court. AIG had attempted to get out of the situation altogether, but a court ordered early in the trial that they would be financially responsible for their client.
The former television and comedic superstar is certainly in a different place than he was 20 years ago. Cosby is now legally blind and has just scratched the surface of his prison sentence.
While his spokesman refused to comment on the ongoing legal battle or Cosby’s attempt at an appeal for his sentence, he did say that Cosby was “doing well” in the prison where he is serving his time, which is located in a suburb of Philadelphia.
According to reports, Cosby is mentoring other inmates and staying busy to keep his mind occupied. He has given several speeches to prisoners who are looking to make a change and has apparently lost a good amount of weight, spending his days working out to get fit.
To many of the prisoners, it appears that Cosby is still “America’s Dad” despite the reasons that landed him behind bars to begin with.
