Less than 24 hours after an assassination attempt against two Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies, Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden has called for gun control.

The deputies were critically injured after a gunman opened fire on their squad car in Compton in an alleged ambush.

Joe Biden Pushes for Gun Control 24 Hours After Deputies are Critically Wounded

As a result of what happened to the deputies, Joe Biden took to Twitter pushing for gun control.

“Weapons of war have no place in our communities,” tweeted Biden. “We need to ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.”

Biden called the shooting “unconscionable,” earlier that day, and said he wanted the suspect to be brought to justice. He said anyone who commits such violence should be “caught and punished.”

“This cold-blooded shooting is unconscionable and the perpetrator must be brought to justice,” wrote Biden. “Violence of any kind is wrong; those who commit it should be caught and punished. Jill and I are keeping the deputies and their loved ones in our hearts and praying for a full recovery.”

What Biden wrote was a stark contrast to Trump’s Twitter reaction, who pushed for a “fast trial,” with the suspect possibly facing the death penalty.

“Animals that must be hit hard!” Trump tweeted. He later wrote, “If [the deputies] die, fast trial death penalty for the killer. Only way to stop this!”

Trump Uses Ambush to Cast Biden as Weak on Crime

Despite Joe Biden pushing for gun control, Trump was quick to use the ambush as a means to attack his Democratic rival. For example, he called for faster courts and tougher criminal sentencing guidelines.

“He’s not strong for law and order and everybody knows that,” said Trump. “When you see a scene like happened just last night in California with the two police people—a woman, a man—shot at stone cold short range.”

Over the weekend, the 31-year-old female deputy and 24-year-old male deputy underwent surgery. They were listed in critical condition. The two deputies were sworn in just over a year ago and the female deputy has a 6-year-old son, said officials during a 10 pm news conference.

The deputy’s families are rallying around them at St. Francis Medical Center in Lynwood California, where they are being treated.

Sheriff Alex Villanueva said the shootings are an example of the dangers officers often face in the streets, and how situations can change in “the blink of an eye.”
