Trump’s Fight with John Legend, Chrissy Teigen Gets Nasty on Twitter

A nasty Twitter fight has erupted between the President and John Legend and his wife Chrissy Teigen.

Legend and Teigen were singled out by the president due to their comments about Trump’s role in the criminal justice reform law, the First Step Act, signed into law last year.

First Step Act

In 2018, the First Step Act was signed into law, which allowed for smaller minimum sentences in some cases and offered more discretion for judges to take it easier on first-time offenders. Around 3,000 inmates have been released from prison as a result of the criminal justice reform. Trump, in classic fashion, is using Twitter to take all the credit for the bill and taking shots at anyone he perceives as ungrateful.

“I SIGNED IT INTO LAW, no one else did, & Republicans deserve much credit. But now that it is passed, people that had virtually nothing to do with it are taking the praise,” the president tweeted after 11 PM on Sunday evening.

Trump’s Tweets

“[…]musician [John Legend], and his filthy mouthed wife, are talking now about how great it is – but I didn’t see them around when we needed help getting it passed. “Anchor”[Lester Holt] doesn’t even bring up the subject of President Trump or the Republicans when talking about the importance or passage of Criminal Justice Reform.

“They only talk about the minor players, or people that had nothing to do with it…And the people that so desperately sought my help when everyone else had failed, all they talk about now is Impeaching President Trump!”

John Legend’s Involvement

Following Trump’s tweets on the subject, which seem to have been spurred by watching MSNBC’s segment on criminal justice reform, John Legend called the president out. “Imagine being president of a whole country and spending your Sunday night hate-watching MSNBC hoping somebody–ANYBODY–will praise you.” Legend tweeted early Monday morning. “Melania, please praise this man.  He needs you.”

Following this, Trump tweeted back at the singer, alleging that people were too quick to forget his contributions to bill, tagging numerous people he felt were involved. Legend’s wife Chrissy Teigen, however, was not tagged.

Teigen’s Clapback

Clapping back, Teigen tweeted “lol what a p**** a** b****. tagged everyone but me. an honor, mister president.” This tweet came largely in response to Trump’s ironic assertion that Teigen is a “foul-mouthed, vulgar woman,” despite his famously short temper and foul language in the public eye.

As a result of her use of colorful language to describe the president, Twitter had to block a hashtag containing the insults from appearing on the “trending” page on the app.
