Fifth Avenue is closed down as a Black Lives Matter mural is being painted in front of Trump Tower. When the mural was first announced, President Trump called it “a symbol of hate.”
On Thursday, New York City shut down a block of Manhattan’s Fifth Avenue. This was done for the purpose of painting a Black Lives Matter mural in front of the Trump Tower.
President Trump called the mural a “symbol of hate.” He added that it would be “denigrating” for the wealthy area known for luxury shopping and expensive apartments.
However, city officials disagree with the President. Therefore, Mayor Bill de Blasio, joined with Rev. Al Sharpton, joined in with helping to paint the mural, NBC reports.
Trump spoke with Sean Hannity during a phone interview with Fox News about Mayor de Blasio on Thursday night. He said, “I was very nice to Mayor de Blasio.”
“I got that man everything. I spoke to him many times,” said Trump to Hannity. “He couldn’t have been nicer. And then he throws a big “Black Lives Matter” sign right down in the middle of Fifth Avenue.”

De Blasio clapped back, tweeting, “Our city isn’t just painting the words on Fifth Avenue. We’re committed to the meaning of the message.” This isn’t the first time that the mayor has defended the mural following the President’s criticism.

“Here’s what you don’t understand: Black people BUILT 5th Ave and so much of this nation. Your ‘luxury’ came from THEIR labor, for which they have never been justly compensated. We are honoring them,” wrote the mayor last week on Twitter. “The fact that you see it as denigrating your street is the definition of racism.”
Similarly, other Black Lives Matter murals have been popping up across the nation. For example, one of those murals is painted on a street that leads up to the White House.
This goes to show that while some Americans are worried about smartphone’s 5g technology, more are concerned about creating a better future. However, others, such as Dominique Hazzard, an organizer with the Black Youth Project 100, would like to see even more done.
“It is important to keep focus on our city’s local issues and the lives lost to prisons and police here in D.C.,” said Hazzard.
