Tonight’s Democratic Debate: What You Need to Know

The next democratic debate is tonight. The candidates will try to win in the next state to hold its primary vote: South Carolina. This will be the third democratic debate of the primary election.

As the fourth state to vote, South Carolina will be a major battleground.

Here’s what you need to know about tonight’s debate.

How to Watch the Debate Tonight

The two-hour debate, which will be held in Charleston, SC, will air at 8 PM Eastern Time.

For those who have cable, CBS will air the debate. For everyone else, stream it on the CBSN app, which is available on Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV and Roku.

Who Qualified for the South Carolina Debate?

Tonight you’ll see nearly all of the notable Democrats vying for the DNC’s presidential nomination:

  • Frontrunner Bernie Sanders
  • Massachusetts senator Elizabeth Warren
  • Former vice president Joe Biden
  • Former mayor of New York Mike Bloomberg
  • Billionaire Tom Steyer
  • Minnesota senator Amy Klobuchar
  • Former South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg

Notably, Hawaiian representative Tulsi Gabbard didn’t qualify for the debate in South Carolina. The DNC’s guidelines for who can join the debate requires a candidate to either:

  • Have a pledged delegate from a prior primary
  • Polling (with at least 10 percent popularity in the state where the debate is occurring, across at least four polls)

Gabbard didn’t meet either requirement. She will sit this debate out.

What the Democrats Think About Bloomberg

The candidates absolutely roasted former Mayor Bloomberg at the Nevada debate. It was the first debate where Bloomberg shared a stage with the other candidates.

The other candidates accused Bloomberg, a former Republican, of trying to “buy” the election. They called him out for throwing millions of his own money behind his campaign.

Buttigieg called Bloomberg “a billionaire who thinks that money ought to be the root of all power.”

Sanders criticized Bloomberg for his racist “stop and frisk” policies as mayor of New York. Elizabeth Warren called Bloomberg an “arrogant billionaire” who “calls women fat broads and horse-faced lesbians.”

Klobuchar added to the spectacular slamming. She said Bloomberg is “hiding behind his TV ads.” Even Joe Biden chimed in to berate the former mayor for opposing Obamacare.

Medicare insurance, debt and past voting records are sure to be hot topics that come up again tonight.

We’re curious to see if a similar roasting will happen tonight, or if Bloomberg will manage to recover from his performance in Vegas. Will Bernie Sanders solidify his position as the frontrunner? Will Warren or Biden make a comeback? Time will tell!
