A school lunch lady was fired after letting a student eat $8 worth of food for free.
“I quietly said, ‘Tell (your) mom you need money,” said Bonnie Kimball, a contracted Cafe Services employee at the Mascoma Valley Region High School in Canaan, New Hampshire.
The student repaid the money the very next day, the same day that Kimball was fired after her manager “witnessed a student coming through the line with multiple food items that you did not charge him for.”
According to Kimball, lunchroom workers were told to never pull trays from kids who didn’t have enough money, instead of allowing them to eat while reminding them to put more funds on their account.
Two of Kimball’s co-workers resigned in protest after her firing.
Many think the firing had something to do with the incident occurring near a time of contract renewal between Cafe Services and the school district.
Kimball, however, says she was just following her supervisor’s instructions and didn’t want to cause “any scenes with the contract”.
On Tuesday, the school board voted 5-1 to renew the $560,000 contract with Cafe Services for another year.
