On Wednesday, California Governor Gavin Newsom ordered much stricter guidelines for indoor activities across the state. California has been seeing a new surge in cases in some counties. This surge has been alarming for many in the state, which had hoped the worst of the pandemic was behind them. Newsom’s restrictions function as a way to help bring the numbers back in check.
Indoor restaurants, movie theaters, zoos and similar businesses are all being curtailed under the new orders. The orders apply only to Los Angeles, Riverside, Ventura, Orange, San Bernardino, Sacramento and other counties with surging case numbers. The move comes ahead of the July 4 weekend, which could see a huge bump in cases.
California had a surprisingly small number of cases early in the pandemic. Recently, the stubborn virus has seen a resurgence in the area. Governor Newsom is aiming to keep the numbers low before they get out of hand.
In the lead up to the Fourth of July, some counties in California have seen huge surges in their COVID-19 cases. This has led to fear among public officials that the holiday weekend could be catastrophic. With many places reopening, there is fear that people will treat the holiday weekend as a normal holiday and ignore social distancing guidelines.
Consider if large crowds with no masks gather in indoor areas over the holiday weekend. That would mean the likelihood of a spike in cases is high.
Instead of going out, many officials hope people will stay in over the holiday. Instead of visiting real Vegas casinos, perhaps Californians can visit those payout online casinos so they can still have some fun over the holiday weekend.
“We have to be much more vigilant in terms of maintaining our physical distancing from others and be much more vigilant as it relates to the prospects of being in situations where we are transmitting COVID-19,” Newsom told reporters on Wednesday. “The decisions we’re making here today — we do so soberly but thoughtfully and deliberately with an idea on mitigating the spread of this virus.”
California currently has over 237,000 confirmed cases. This follows a week of record-breaking increases in the virus’ spread in the state. The state has seen over 6,000 COVID-19 deaths. This has gone hand-in-hand with some people in the state ignoring other guidelines. People are not social distancing guidelines and are going to public places without masks.
