If you would like to give the gift of nightmares and lost sleep this holiday season, consider taking your friends and family to see the new Cats movie, which will be in theatres this December.
The first trailer was just released, and if you had high hopes for this flick, well… you can watch the trailer at the bottom of this article, if you dare.
Tom Hooper, who previously directed Les Miserables, has a star-studded cast to back him up. Taylor Swift is playing Bombalurina, Jason Derulo is Rum Tum Tugger (This is not a joke), and James Corden will be Bustopher Jones.
Judy Dench, Idris Elba, Rebel Wilson, Jennifer Hudson, and Sir Ian McKellen round out the biggest names.
But no amount of stars could save this CGI work.
Most of the cats that are appearing in the trailer are not wearing clothes (But some have developed a sense of modesty with no explanation as to why as of yet), but they are covered in strange CGI fur.
The CGI is hyper-realistic, which is great for some applications… but maybe not giant talking people-cats. This trailer may actually be the definition of ‘uncanny valley’, which is where viewers feel revulsion or deep discomfort with something that is just a little too lifelike for comfort.
Cat’s is set to be released on December 20th, 2019. We’ll reserve final judgment until then, but it isn’t looking great.
