A woman loses her husband to her mother; Cigarette costs soar to $48 a pack; Platypuses are on the ‘brink of extinction’ and Netflix scores a big win.
A daughter’s world has been crushed after losing her new husband to her very own mother after just eight weeks of marriage. Lauren Wall, who married her husband, airport worker Paul White, said, “Paul always got on really well with mom. I never thought it strange though, as she was his mom-in-law and he was just being friendly.”
Lauren first noticed that things seemed awry when her husband became very protective of his phone, and four weeks later, her sister noticed texts between their mother, Julie, and Paul. When Lauren confronted her husband, he refused to let her see his phone.
A few days later, Paul ended up walking out on not only his wife but also their seven-month-old daughter. It wasn’t long after that when Lauren started to hear rumors that he was living with her mother, and then she spotted her apparently pregnant mother walking down the street one day.

“When I saw her in the street and noticed she had a bump, my mind raced,” said Lauren. “She clutched her stomach and told me, ‘It’s a cyst’. I felt so sick, I went home and destroyed all the photos of our wedding.”
Nine months after Paul left Lauren, her mother gave birth to his baby. At first, her mother tried to claim the baby’s father was another boyfriend, but she and Paul officially announced that they were a couple that summer, and decided to get married.
“I went to watch Mom marry the same man I’d wed five years earlier,” said Lauren. Thankfully for Lauren, she found a new partner and is happily pregnant with her fourth child. And although she says she will always have trust issues, she and her mother have tried to repair their relationship.
“Time is a great healer, and my mom and I have tried to have a normal relationship. But we will never be as close as we were–and I’ll never fully trust her again.”
Starting in September, the average price of a pack of cigarettes will soar by 12.5%, raising the cost to almost $50. This will be one of the highest prices in the world and marks the eighth consecutive yearly increase in Australia’s attempt to reduce tobacco use.
This means smokers who go through at least one pack a day will now be spending $10,000 a year to fund their habit.

Within fifty years, the platypus species is expected to decline by up to 66 percent thanks to soaring temperatures across the country and the intense drought caused by climate issues. Land clearing is also affecting the re-population of the species.
The future for the platypus looks grim, according to Richard Kingsford, the director of UNSW’s Centre for Ecosystem Science.
“This is impacting their ability to survive during these extended dry periods and increased demand for water,” he said. Researchers say that the platypus’ habitat needs to be managed in order to prevent total extinction.
