Kanye West seems to have found his silver lining this week during the opening of his new opera, Mary. If you didn’t know that Ye was in the opera game, get it together; Mary is his second opera.
I don’t know if it’s Kanye’s dream to become a superhero and The Silver Surfer seemed like the most attainable one (with his fame and mental state, we would have put money on Batman), or if he really likes the color silver.
The internet is in an uproar over this confusing new look, and many are wondering if this is just Kanye’s new look.
He’s done weirder things.
Kanye’s newest opera, titled Mary, follows the Christmas nativity story in true Kanye fashion. It features several traditional holiday songs, such as “O Holy Night” and “Gloria in Excelsis Deo” reimagined for the opera.
He also reworked several of his own original songs into it, such as “Power” and “Love Lockdown”. All the works were arranged around a brass section, choir, and a Mellotron.
Much like his first opera, Nebuchadnezzar, the choir was completely matching in their robes. One extra was added, however – any exposed skin was coated in shining silver paint. It was a choice.
In Kanye’s last opera, he narrated from the sidelines but was never on stage. In Mary, Kanye took center stage, reciting various bible passages and lending his voice to the songs.
Only a few of the performers were outside of the silver robes and makeup, including the actress who played the Virgin Mary. She was, for some reason, dressed head-to-toe in a seafoam green robe.
The opera took place at the boat-racing arena Miami Marine Stadium, which is only accessible via motorboat. It started around 4 pm on Sunday, an hour later than planned, and ran about a full hour.
The performers were loaded onto motorboats and whisked off stage after the show ended.
Twitter did not like Kanye’s outfit, which we get. One user said that Kanye’s “Wizard of Oz” get-up could not go unanswered, while another shared the image with the text “This is a rare silver Kanye, retweet for good luck”.

We weren’t the only ones getting the Silver Surfer vibe, either.
We thank Hollywood for it inclusiveness. It’s about time we had a black Silver Surfer and who better than Kanye West. pic.twitter.com/XhjW3RxdJs
