One woman’s actions stopped a potentially deadly mass shooting, less than a month before the tragic shootings in El Paso and Dayton.

William Patrick Williams, 19, from Lubbock, Texas, was arrested by special agents of ATF and FBI following a brief hospitalization. Williams had planned to carry out a shooting at a local hotel.

Grandmother’s Action Interrupts Shooter’s Plot

The man revealed his plan to his grandmother, telling her that he had recently purchased an AK-47 because was going to “shoot up” the hotel and have a cop end his life for him. Seeing that her grandson was both homicidal and didn’t want to live, the grandmother convinced Williams to visit a hospital instead.

Williams was arrested after the hospitalization and gave officers consent to search the room he had rented at the hotel. They found an AK-47, seventeen magazines loaded with ammunition, tactical gear, and several knives. He said that he laid out the weapons on the bed so that law enforcement could take custody of them.

U.S. Attorney Nealy Cox praised Williams’ grandmother for “interrupting this plot” and saving the lives of many.
