There’s been a lot of buzz about Jeffrey Epstein lately, as well as several major conspiracy theories surrounding his death. Now, the autopsy of Epstein’s body will hopefully lend some more clues into what, exactly, happened.
So far, it has revealed several broken bones in the disgraced financier’s neck, one of which was his hyoid bone.
While this is consistent with suicide by hanging, The Washington Post reports that it’s more common in murders involving strangulation.
The 66-year-old convicted sex offender was discovered hanging in his New York City jail cell on Saturday in an “apparent suicide.” Reports also say he had a bed sheet wrapped around his neck when he was found.
Epstein was being held at the Metropolitan Correctional Center on sex trafficking charges. He was also embroiled in quite a mess that could potentially implicate other rich, famous people. That, alone, makes the case quite concerning.
Though he’d been placed on suicide watch, it had been lifted by the time the incident occurred.
Regardless, surveillance videos show that guards had not been checking on Epstein as often as they were supposed to. They have also been suspected of falsifying logs to make it seem like they had been.
By protocol, the prisoner was supposed to be checked on every half hour. The video, however, shows this as not happening. Reportedly, some guards let Epstein go as long as three hours without being checked on.
Apparently, thy had even fallen asleep on duty.
On Tuesday, the Department of Justice asserted that two of the guards tasked with watching Epstein had been placed on administrative leave. Additionally, they say Attorney General William Bar demands a “thorough investigation.”
Many signs do point to Epstein’s death being a suicide. However, NYC’s chief medical examiner has listed his cause of death as pending.
According to Daily Mail, sources say Epstein was in “great spirits,” prior to his death. He allegedly met with his legal team daily and believed they would win an appeal to grant him bail.
Epstein also reportedly told his lawyer, “I’ll see you Sunday,” on Friday, before his expiration on Saturday.
His body has been claimed by one of the supposed billionaire’s “associates,” who has, so far, remained a mystery. Speculation suggests, however, it may have been his brother Mark Epstein.
Originally, it was reported that Epstein may have attempted suicide on July 23, hence his original placement on suicide watch.
However, he allegedly informed his lawyers that those initial neck injuries were inflicted by his cellmate Nicholas Tartaglione. As a result, he was given his own cell – and also taken off suicide watch.
Tartaglione’s lawyers have claimed that Epstein had, in fact, attempted suicide and that his client alerted guards to save him.
