Nothing like being welcomed with open arms. President Trump has plans tomorrow to fly to El Paso, Texas, as well as Dayton, Ohio, in the wake of two major mass shootings in less than 24 hours.

El Paso lawmakers are less than pleased with his decision, and as one Democratic commissioner put it, Trump’s visit would be like “putting salt in the wound”.

Presidential Responsibility

Democrats all over the US have spoken out since the shootings Saturday and Sunday, which took 31 lives and injured dozens. Many believe that the President’s speech and beliefs are the reason that these shootings took place, to begin with.

Beto O’Rourke, former Texas rep who is a Democratic 2020 hopeful, said that the President “has no place” in Texas and that the shooters fed on “the kind of fear” that Trump “traffics”. His replacement, Veronica Escobar, is also against the President’s visit. She says that he has made her “community and [my] people the enemy”.

He’s Coming Anyway, Though

As of now, there is no change to his schedule and he will be in El Paso tomorrow. Mayor Dee Margo said that it was “formal duty” to accept Trump to El Paso and that he anticipates a political spin. His office is currently receiving an influx of calls from those who are against the visit.

While no official schedule has been released yet, the Air Force has plans to take Air Force One to El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio. Dayton’s Mayor Nan Whaley, however, said that she had “not gotten a call” about a presidential visit as of Monday evening.
