Education Secretary Betsy DeVos has been all over the media lately. Not only has she accused many sources as using her name for “clickbait” purposes, she’s also slammed teachers for striking during school hours.
Thousands of teachers are expected to leave their classrooms in demonstrations during this Teacher Appreciation Week. Many are protesting a lack of education funding as well as class sizes.
“I think it’s important that adults have adult disagreements on adult time, and that they not ultimately hurt kids in the process,” DeVos told those attending the National Education Writers Association conference on Monday when asked about supporting teacher strikes.
“I think too often they’re doing so by walking out of classrooms and having arguments in the way that they are,” she added.
“Great teachers need to be paid well,” DeVos said in her report, later taking aim at American labor leader Randi Weingarten.
DeVos said: “Great teachers perhaps should be making at least half as much as what Randi Weingarten does at a half million dollars a year,” DeVos said, referring to the president of the American Federation of Teachers. Weingarten’s union has been a major critic of DeVos.
Imagine, a $200,000 salary for teachers.
“We could do this if Betsy worked with us to revoke tax cuts for rich people. She won’t even have to give up the summer homes and the yachts,” said Weingarten.
