Democratic Strategist Feels Biden Should Pick Warren as Running Mate

Some democratic pundits feel as though Biden’s best bet for vice president pick is former presidential hopeful Elizabeth Warren. Warren, a Senator from Massachusetts, is far to Biden’s left, and is a self-described socialist. Some feel as though she would soften Biden’s image with younger voters and win over more women.

This comes as top republican aides fear Trump may stand a solid chance of actually losing the election. Along with him, others are worried that republicans could lose their Senate majority. One such aide anonymously told CNN “Put it this way, I am very glad my boss isn’t on the ballot this cycle”. This statement underscores the pressure republicans are feeling from the COVID-19 pandemic, and continued low approval ratings of Trump and republicans in Congress.

Biden Needs Younger Support to Challenge Trump

Stan Greenberg, longtime Bill Clinton pollster, has stated he feels that Biden’s best bet is to tap Warren for VP pick. Politico reported that Greenberg is urging Biden’s campaign to consider Warren as a way to reach Millennials. Younger voters, generally, are unexcited about Biden. Low turnout of younger voters could spell disaster for the Biden campaign, much like what happened with Hillary Clinton in 2016.

If he is to capture younger voters, Greenberg argues, Biden needs the right running mate. “Above all else, the party needs consolidation. That’s where the overwhelming percentage of votes are,” Greenberg wrote.

In a presentation to the Biden campaign, Greenberg told strategists, “The biggest threat to democrats in 2020 is the lack of support and disengagement of millennials and the fragmentation of non-Biden primary voters.”

While the economy flags due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Biden has a chance to score a surprise victory. Business owners are searching “marketing my business online” as they watch their coffers drain. The election could serve as a referendum on the president and his party.

Senate Could be Bigger Prize Than Presidency

In the November election, the Senate could play an even bigger role than the White House. This is because republicans will be defending some 23 seats in 2020. At present, they only enjoy a slim three seat lead over democrats in the upper chamber. Should just four of those drop, the democrats will have control of the Senate.

Likewise, democrats currently control the lower house, the House of Representatives. Should they hold that majority through 2020, they will continue to be a thorn in the side of republican lawmakers. Now, many republicans fear that 2020 could bring a blue wave, flipping the White House and Senate while keeping the House firmly in the hands of democrats. This could spell disaster for republicans.
