Contigo Recalling Millions of Children’s Water Bottles Yet Again

Contigo, a company that makes plastic water bottles, is recalling about 5.7 million of their products for fear that children could choke on them.

The company discovered that certain components of the bottle are capable of coming loose and lodging in a child’s windpipe.

In August of 2019, Contigo issued a different recall for similar reasons. That first recall affected millions of water bottles, all of which were for children. Ironically, this new recall also covers some of the replacements issued in the first recall.

Why Is Contigo Recalling Water Bottles?

The Contigo company received 427 reports of the spout coming loose from the bottle. In 27 of these cases, the spout was found in a child’s mouth. The company has stated that they are not aware of any injuries from this issue.

The recalled water bottles were sold through Walmart, Target and Costco between April 2018 and February 6, 2020. Recalled bottles came in three sizes: 13 ounce, 14 ounce and 20 ounce.

Additionally, the bottles came in four colors: stainless steel, solid color, graphic and stainless steel solid color.

Contigo Recall Information

If you’ve purchased one of these bottles, you should return them to the place of purchase or contact Contigo for a replacement. The bottles in question were all imported to Chicago, and they all share the recall number 20-074. You can find this number along the rim of the bottle and along the bottom.

Contigo issued a release explaining the recall.

“Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled water bottles and the replacement lids provided in the previous recall,” the release reads. “Take them away from children.”

If your child chokes on the spout of a recalled water bottle, an adult should either attempt first aid (if they know how) or take the child to the hospital. If a child chokes on a small part, it can be deadly and difficult to dislodge.
