The federal government was directed by Attorney General William Barr on Thursday to start resuming capital punishment. Five inmates are being scheduled to have their lives ended for the first time in two decades. The first of which will happen on December 9, 2019.
In an announcement, Barr said, “The Justice Department upholds the rule of law, and we owe it to the victims and their families to carry forward the sentence imposed by our justice system.”
He continued, “Congress has expressly authorized the death penalty through legislation adopted by the people’s representatives in both houses of Congress and signed by the President.”
The inmates are accused of various crimes against the most innocent in our society, including children and the elderly, according to an official statement from the Department of Justice.
The method will involve a single injection as opposed to a triple-injection procedure that has been previously used by past administrations.
