Boy Scouts of America Files for Bankruptcy; Jeff Bezos Pledges $10 Billion to Help Fight Climate Change; and the RSPCA Launches a $29 Adoption Sale.
After legal costs kept mounting thanks to the Boy Scouts of America defending itself against lawsuits that alleged abuse against boys, the nonprofit has now sought Chapter 11 protection. A spokesperson for the Boy Scouts said that the BSA plans to use Chapter 11 to create a Victims Compensation Trust to provide “equitable compensation to victims.”
“The BSA cares deeply about all victims of abuse and sincerely apologizes to anyone who was harmed during their time in Scouting. We are outraged that there have been times when individuals took advantage of our programs to harm innocent children,” said Roger Mosby, BSA’s president and chief executive officer.
“While we know nothing can undo the tragic abuse that victims suffered,” he continued, “we believe the Chapter 11 process–with the proposed Trust structure–will provide equitable compensation to all victims while maintaining the BSA’s important mission.”

Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon and the wealthiest person in the world, has stepped forth to pledge $10 billion to a new initiative called the Bezos Earth Fund. Bezos posted an explanation of what he hopes the initiative will accomplish on Instagram:
“Today, I’m thrilled to announce I am launching the Bezos Earth Fund.
Climate change is the biggest threat to our planet. I want to work alongside others both to amplify known ways and to explore new ways of fighting the devastating impact of climate change on this planet we all share.
This global initiative will fund scientists, activists, NGOs — any effort that offers a real possibility to help preserve and protect the natural world. We can save Earth. It’s going to take collective action from big companies, small companies, nation states, global organizations, and individuals.
I’m committing $10 billion to start and will begin issuing grants this summer. Earth is the one thing we all have in common — let’s protect it, together.
– Jeff”

Winter blues got you down? I hear you. But here’s one way to fight the 7 signs of depression: take home a fur baby for only $29! For those who want to adopt a new pet but balk at the outrageously high adoption fees, the RSPCA is here to help. Their annual “Clear the Shelters” sale will list hundreds of animals for adoption for only $29.
Not only are the usual dogs and cats available for adoption, but the sale also includes guinea pigs, bunnies, turkeys, ducks, and horses. Yes, you can adopt a horse for the low price of $29 during the RSPCA’s adoption sale.
The RSPCA states, “Even though the $29 adoption fee does not come close to covering the cost of treating and caring for the animals, you can’t put a price on finding forever homes for animals in need.”
