Beloved internet celebrity Grumpy Cat passed away on Tuesday, following complications that arose from a urinary tract infection. The frowny-faced feline was 7 years old.
A trending topic on social media, fans all over the world are mourning her death.
The beloved feline rose to fame after her owner Tabatha Bundesen’s brother posted her picture on Reddit in 2012. Suddenly, Grumpy Cat – known to her family as Tardar Sauce – became an online sensation, her unique appearance owed to feline dwarfism and an underbite.
Her popularity grew out of internet memes, and before they knew it, Tardar had become a bona fide superstar. Not even a year old, Grumpy Cat quickly began landing sponsorships and promotional deals. She not only became a spokescat for Friskies, there was even a TV movie deal with Lifetime co-starring Aubrey Plaza.
Capitalizing on her fame, Tardar’s family made millions; previously, Bundesen had worked at Red Lobster as a waitress.
On Friday, April 17, 2019, the family posted the sad news on social media – Grumpy Cat had died.
“Despite care from top professionals, as well as from her very loving family, Grumpy encountered complications from a recent urinary tract infection that unfortunately became too tough for her to overcome,” they wrote. “She passed away peacefully on the morning of Tuesday, May 14, at home in the arms of her mommy, Tabatha.”
They went on to add, “Besides being our baby and a cherished member of the family, Grumpy Cat has helped millions of people smile all around the world—even when times are tough.”
Although Tardar Sauce is gone, we’re sure her memes will survive for years to come. As her family said: “Her spirit will continue to live on through her fans everywhere.”
RIP Tardar Sauce, you’ll be sorely missed by fans and meme aficionados around the world.
