The trend of killing off a number of vehicle models continues in the auto industry, as automakers adjust to changing buyer preferences. Here’s a look at what vehicle models are getting the ax in 2019 and which previously discontinued models are coming back from the dead.
Across the board, numerous automakers are discontinuing several models of passenger cars, mostly sedans, compacts and hatchbacks, as these have fallen out of favor with auto buyers.
As the cost of gasoline has largely remained below $3 per gallon since 2014, another type of vehicles that buyers haven’t flocked to are hybrids, and several type of hybrid vehicles are getting killed off in 2019.
As large vehicles and sedans are falling out of favor, Chevrolet will be killing off its large sedan, the Chevrolet Impala.
Chevrolet will also be discontinuing its compact sedan, the Chevrolet Cruze.
GM was an innovator in hybrid vehicles, and practically invented the plug-in hybrid, but now, GM is pulling the plug on the vehicle that started it all: The Chevrolet Volt.
Ford will be killing off its large sedan, the Taurus.
Ford will also be discontinuing its Focus compact sedan.
Ford’s version of a plug-in hybrid, the Ford C-Max is getting the ax.
Ford will revive its Ranger pickup in 2019.
Honda will be discontinuing its luxury sedan the Hyundai Azera, it will be replacing it with a new luxury vehicle named Genesis.
As hybrid sales are tanking, the automaker is also killing its compact hybrid the Honda CR-Z.
Honda will be resurrecting its Passport SUV.
Toyota’s large version of the Prius hybrid, the Toyota Prius V, which hasn’t been manufactured since 2017, is still selling – but nonetheless, this model is getting the ax.
Toyota will revive its Supra sports car.
Nissan is killing off its subcompact crossover, the Nissan Juke, and it will be replaced by a new model the Nissan Kicks.
Cadillac is killing off two of its large luxury sedans that Cadillac CT6 and XTS models.
Cadillac is also discontinuing its compact luxury sedan the Cadillac ATS.
After a long history, Volkswagen will be discontinuing its iconic Volkswagen Beetle model. The 2019 model will be its last one. For a while, anyway.
Volkswagen is also killing off its popular Volkswagen Touareg in the US, but will continue to sell it in foreign markets.
In 2019, Volkswagen plans to introduce more SUVs.
