US Guaranteed Minimum Wage Floated by Pelosi as Coronavirus Response

This week the possibility of a guaranteed minimum wage was floated by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. The minimum income would be part of a potential Phase 4 response to the coronavirus outbreak.

“Let’s see what works, what is operational, and what needs other attention? Others have suggested a minimum income. A guaranteed income for people. Is that worthy of attention now? Perhaps so,” said Pelosi to MSNBC on Monday.

Former 2020 hopeful Andrew Yang echoed Pelosi’s sentiment on April 13. He posted on Twitter saying he believed the stimulus checks were not enough.

“Thrilled that #StimulusChecks are reaching Americans who filed for direct deposit. They will help. But they are not enough. They should be monthly and should go to EVERY American regardless of circumstance.”

However, Pelosi did seem to have a few doubts about how the income plan could be implemented. “But again, recognize the realities of it all. What is the execution of it? What is working? And what are we getting our money’s worth on? I think we have to look at that, too.”

California Paying Restaurants for Senior Citizen Meals and Deliveries

California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced a new program that will pay restaurants to deliver meals to the homes of senior citizens during the COVID-19 crisis.

The initiative, called “Restaurants Deliver: Home Meals for Seniors,” will work together with FEMA.

Newsom says the purpose is two-fold and is meant to keep seniors well-fed while also helping to avoid the spread of the virus.

“We’ve been thinking about what more we can do with these extended stay-at-home orders and the expectation that even as we begin to toggle back on the stay-at-home orders, that our seniors will continue to be a focus of our energies,” said Newsom.

“This partnership will allow for the ability for restaurants to start rehiring people or keep people currently employed and start preparing meals—three meals a day, seven days a week—and have those meals delivered to our seniors,” he added.

Some seniors have special problems, such as the need for a denture dentist to aid them while eating. Hopefully, the program can help with special dietary needs that dentures can cause.

How a Dallas Salon Tried to Defy Stay-at-Home Orders

After a Dallas salon reopened their business despite stay-at-home orders, they were issued a citation. The Dallas County Judge, Clay Jenkins, also sent the salon a cease and desist order, and told the owner, Shelley Luther, that she had to close Salon A la Mode.

However, she says that she plans to stay open and does not plan to pay any of the fines. She said, “I don’t want to cause any problems, but when you’re out of money someone has to stand up and say that they’re not helping us by not letting us work.”

Luther said that stylists seeking work are welcome to rent space at the salon.
