Michigan State Senator Apologizes for Calling Capitol Attack a Hoax

Mike Shirkey, the republican Senate Majority Leader in Michigan’s State Senate, apologized recently for his statements in a candid video that were released online. In the footage, the state politician alleges that the January 6 Capitol attack that claimed five lives was, in fact, a hoax.

In the video, Shirkey claims that the mob was not composed of pro-Trump rioters, but instead a pre-arranged attack to make Republicans look bad, organized by shadowy forces behind the scenes. Shirkey even suggests in the video that Mitt Romney was somehow involved in some kind of arrangement of the rioters.

“I said some things in a videoed conversation that are not fitting for the role I am privileged to serve. I own that,” Shirkey claimed in a statement to the press. “I have many flaws. Being passionate coupled with an occasional lapse in restraint of tongue are at least two of them. I regret the words I chose, and I apologize for my insensitive comments.”
