Calling Joe Biden an ally to military families and a friend of 40 years, Cindy McCain, the wife of the late John McCain R-AZ, endorsed the Democratic presidential nominee.

Mrs. McCain avoided directly criticizing Trump, who had a legendary rivalry with her husband that lingered even after his death.

The endorsement comes weeks before Arizonans are to begin voting and after anonymous sources claimed to The Atlantic that the President ridiculed McCain and others in the military throughout his term in office.

In an interview with the Arizona Republic, McCain said the endorsement is in part attributable to the character she sees in Biden, who, like her, is a parent to troops who have served the United States military.

McCain said the decision was about her, not about honoring her husband’s legacy.

“I’m like everybody else: I like a good leader and I feel like right now the president doesn’t have my back, he doesn’t take a stand on things that are really important and we have a time of crisis,” Cindy McCain said.
