Jennifer Lopez and Shakira have made a huge announcement! According to an official release from both of their Twitter accounts, the pair of superstars will be headlining this year’s Super Bowl together.

While the pro football season is just getting started, it’s never too early to start thinking about the post season and the big game. All Americans can unite in their hopes that we’ll get to see Jennifer Lopez and Shakira killing it onstage, and hopefully not see a New England Patriot anywhere near the game.

How did They Announce the News?

Jennifer Lopez announced her involvement with an official press release. “Ever since I saw Diana Ross fly off into the sky at the Halftime Show, I dreamed of performing at the Super Bowl. And now it’s made even more special not only because it’s the NFL’s 100th anniversary, but also because I am performing with a fellow Latina. I can’t wait to show what us girls can do on the world’s biggest stage.”

On Shakira’s Twitter, she excitedly broke the news to her fans. “It doesn’t get any bigger than this! So excited about getting on that #SuperBowlLIV #PepsiHalftime stage!” Shakira tweeted. Fan’s reactions on Twitter have ranged from excitement about the presence of two Latina superstars on the big stage to relief that it’s not another odd inclusion like Maroon 5.

Shakira stated further, in an interview, “I’m so honored to be taking on one of the world’s biggest stages in the company of a fellow female artist to represent Latinos and Latinas from the U.S. and all over the world — and to top it off, on my birthday!” Shakira will be turning 43 on the day of the Super Bowl. “This is a true American dream and we are going to bring the show of a lifetime!”

How Big of a Deal is This?

The Super Bowl is the most-watched televised event in the US, and one of the most-watched sporting events in the world. American football is extremely popular among fans from all walks of life, so the Super Bowl Halftime Show has to strike the right balance between appealing to a wide audience but still being a spectacle.

If any superstars have what it takes to make an awesome halftime show, it’s longtime pros, Shakira and Jennifer Lopez.
