How Many People Need to be Vaccinated to End the Pandemic?

Research from health experts suggests that the COVID-19 pandemic will likely be brought under control when the US reaches between 70 and 85 percent of the population being vaccinated. However, that target number is still a good while off: by the end of January, less than ten percent of the population was vaccinated.

Experts are also battling the perception of the vaccine as potentially harmful. Many have fought against the portrayal of the rapidly-developed vaccine as something dangerous, noting that resistance to vaccination by some parts of the population could serve as a major stumbling block for ending the pandemic.

Even as this rollout continues, there are beginning to be questions about the efficiency of vaccinating the oldest Americans first. Research shows that people between 20 and 49 are the most likely to catch and spread the disease, making some experts suggest vaccinating that population first could be better for slowing the spread of the virus.
