Facebook Paying $52 Million to Content Moderators

Thousands of Facebook contract workers will be paid up to $1,000 each. This is according to a settlement agreement announced on Tuesday. The workers view and remove posts that are considered disturbing from the platform for a living.

In addition, some of the workers may receive damages up to $50,000 per person. This is because some workers have been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder. Not only that, but other conditions. These were related to their work as content moderators for Facebook.

“We are so pleased that Facebook worked with us to create an unprecedented program to help people performing work that was unimaginable even a few years ago,” said Steve William, a lawyer that represented the content moderators. “The harm that can be suffered from this work is real and severe.”

Additionally, a Facebook spokesperson responded to NPR in an email about the matter.

“We are grateful to the people who do this important work to make Facebook a safe environment for everyone. We’re committed to providing them additional support through this settlement and in the future.”

Yale Epidemiologist Calls US COVID-19 Response ‘Close to Genocide’

Gregg Gonsalves, a Yale epidemiologist, is arguing that the United States is guilty of “genocide by default”. Additionally, he suggests that the Trump administration might face charges under international law.

Posting on Twitter, Gonsalves posed this question:

“How many people will die this summer, before Election Day? What proportion of the deaths will be among African-Americans, Latinos, other people of color? This is getting awfully close to genocide by default. What else do you call mass death by public policy?”

Thus, he continued:

“So, what does it mean to let thousands die by negligence, omission, failure to act, in a legal sense under international law?

“And I am being serious here: what is happening in the US is purposeful, considered negligence, omission, failure to act by our leaders. Can they be held responsible under international law?”

According to an Associated Press analysis, nearly one-third of the deaths caused by coronavirus have been African American.

However, some people still think it’s a hoax. But, not everyone thinks so.

Will Coronavirus Survivors Suffer Continued Illnesses for Years?

UK researchers have gathered data that suggests the primary symptoms from coronavirus can come and go. They found that they can endure for ’30 days or more’. This is far beyond the two-week period suggested by the World Health Organization.

A recent report warns that COVID-19 sufferers may face a threat of ‘post-Covid disability’. Not to mention, a lung doctor who treated Boris Johnson also warned that coronavirus could end up becoming ‘this generation’s polio.’ This could lead to debilitating problems for patients for months, even years after the symptoms first begin.

Similarly, Prof Hart, a critical care specialist at Guy’s and St. Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust also posted about the matter on Twitter, saying:

‘Covid-19 is this generation’s polio. Patients have mild, moderate, and severe illness. Large numbers of patients will have physical, cognitive, and psychological disability post-critical illness that will require long-term management.’

As a result, people who survived coronavirus may still need to play it safe. But, there may still be hope as we learn more about the virus. Thankfully, people have been able to stay home.

For example, if they need pet food order online is available.
