El Chapo’s Wife Arrested on Drug Charges

The wife of Joaquin Guzman, also known as El Chapo, has been arrested in the US on numerous drug charges relating to her assistance with her husband’s criminal empire. Emma Coronel Aispuro, a dual-citizen of both the US and Mexico, was married to Guzman in 2007, when she was just a teenager.

The two have twin daughters together. Guzman also has four sons from previous relationships. Since Guzman’s most recent arrest in 2016, and his subsequent sentencing to life in prison in 2019, Guzman’s sons have taken over his role in the Sinaloa drug cartel.

Aispuro, for her own part, faces charges including conspiracy to move drugs into the US. She is thought to have worked with Guzman in helping him escape from a Mexican prison in 2015. Her arrest is the latest in a series of US-based legal actions taken against the cartel. Her arrest could be a precursor to an uptick in cartel-led violence near the US-Mexico border.
