Adele Files for Divorce, Throws in the Towel on Marriage

After 7 years of marriage, Adele has filed for divorce from Simon Konecki. The beloved singer and songwriter gave birth to the couple’s one child, Angelo, in October 2012.

Adele and Konicki have both reiterated that they’re committed to raising their child together, “lovingly.”

The divorce has been a long time coming, as Adele separated from Konecki all the way back in April. It’s somewhat ironic that the public is only just now hearing about the divorce, as the couple’s marriage was a secret until 2017.

Konicki and Adele were married in a secretive ceremony back in 2011.

On the Rocks

The last time the couple was spotted out in public was back in January of this year when they were seen at an Elton John concert in LA. Adele’s since been spotted enjoying the town without her ex, enjoying time with Drake in LA and hitting a bar in New York with Jennifer Lawrence. The singer’s kept a relatively low profile in the public eye since separating from Konicki.

It’s unclear what, exactly, caused the split. Both were rather secretive about their relationship, keeping the ins and outs of it out of the public eye. Given the length of time of their separation, there’s a chance that the two were hoping they could reconcile things. However, the official divorce filing by Adele means that she’s likely more ready to be rid of him than vice versa.

Divorce Rates

Nearly half of all first marriages end in divorce in the modern era. While it’s unclear what Adele’s next move is, we hope that it’s not to rush into another marriage: over sixty percent of second marriages end in divorce. As you might expect, third marriages fare even worse, with nearly three-quarters of them ending in divorce.

Interestingly, Adele’s marriage to Konecki was almost textbook. Of first marriages that end in divorce, the average time span they cover is eight years. What’s more, at 31, she’s almost exactly the median age of all divorcees: 30. As for her odds of remarrying? Well, three out of every four people who get a divorce will remarry.
